Upon his recent appointment as President of Fu Jen Catholic University, Dr. Yi-Chen Lan immediately launched a new ESG-based sustainable development initiative. On February 20, 2024, Fu Jen convened a partnership meeting with Laiming Senior High School and the Taiwan Ecological Sustainability Association (TESA), aiming to establish a cross-sector cooperation platform.

President Lan, accompanied by Vice Presidents Fr. Lin Zhi-Ding and Prof. Wang Ying-Chou, as well as administrative officers and members of the University’s Ecology Research Center, joined the discussion. Representatives from Laiming High School, including Chairman Fr. Kao Cheng-Tsai and Principal Lo Chia-Chiang, as well as TESA’s Chairman Chien Mao-Nan and several board members, were in attendance.

President Lan introduced the university’s “CORE” strategy for sustainability: C for Cooperation, O for Operation, R for Research, and E for Engagement—framing the approach within the values of Pope Francis’ Laudato Si. Vice President Wang elaborated on Fu Jen’s integration of the SDGs across its 13,000 courses, highlighting a vision to become a regional leader and certifier in circular economy education.

Laiming High School shared its experience with green building and ESG practices, earning high praise from the Fu Jen delegation. Both institutions expressed interest in strengthening curriculum partnerships and advancing pathways to higher education.

TESA’s Chairman Chien introduced the association’s mission to support Catholic schools in building shared sustainability platforms. Dr. Wu Kuang-Yu emphasized the importance of ecological campuses as living classrooms for developing environmental leadership.

At the meeting’s conclusion, Chairman Chien gifted President Lan a recycled eco-friendly bag made from PET bottles, crafted by Liu Yi-Feng and the Cheng Hui-Chung Textile Studio—symbolizing the spirit of environmental responsibility and innovation. The meeting ended with Fr. Kao’s blessing and a collective commitment to a sustainable future.
