【English Version】
Sister Rosemary, a German national, has dedicated nearly 60 years of her life to Taiwan. At the age of 86, she remains an inspiring figure who founded the Department of Textiles and Clothing at Fu Jen Catholic University in 1970. Her lifelong contributions to textile education in Taiwan have earned her the title “Mother of Textiles.”
Born in Germany in 1947, Sister Rosemary earned dual degrees in Home Economics and Education from the Holy Spirit College in Manila in 1965. She came to Taiwan in 1966 to begin her teaching mission, later founding the Department of Textiles and Clothing at Fu Jen in 1970. She also pursued advanced studies in the United States at the University of Wisconsin and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York.
During the height of Taiwan’s textile industry, she actively promoted industry-academia collaboration, nurturing thousands of students and professionals in textile design.
In a recent public lecture, Sister Rosemary reflected on her life journey through the lens of Pope Francis’s Laudato Si. From Germany to the Philippines, Taiwan, and the U.S., what began as a spiritual mission transformed into a lifelong devotion to education, culture, and sustainability.
She believes her path is a divine calling, aligned with the core of Laudato Si—caring for our common home and responding to the cries of the Earth and the poor. She concluded by quoting Pope Francis: “Only by changing education can we change the world.”
Sister Rosemary encouraged everyone in attendance to be “agents of change,” promoting sustainability and human well-being through their individual efforts.
