【English Version】 Jointly organized by Providence University and Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, and co-organized by TESA, the national workshop “Laudato Si: Praise Be to You” on ecological education aimed to raise public awareness of environmental protection. Inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si, the event featured keynote speeches and model teaching sessions from Philippine ecological advocates Rodne Rodiño Galicha and John Leo C. Algo, cultivating “seed educators” in environmental literacy. Providence University President Dr. Szu-Ling Lin emphasized that while young people care about environmental and climate issues, they often lack the tools and experiences to take action. The university launched the “First Year Initiative” to guide freshmen through immersive learning in wetlands, tribal communities, and local industries, fostering environmental consciousness and sustainable thinking. During the workshop, Galicha elaborated on the spirit of Laudato Si and its connection to the United Nations SDGs, stressing the interdependence of humans and nature. He promoted the “9R Principles”: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair, Refuse, Rethink, Reconnect, Reforest, and Respect nature—simple lifestyle changes to protect our common home. John Leo C. Algo, national coordinator of Aksyon Klima Pilipinas, discussed the science of climate change and emphasized how small everyday actions can drive substantial impact. He encouraged environmental educators to present ecological knowledge in relatable, engaging ways. Fr. Anjen Yang, university chaplain, noted that 2024 marks the 9th anniversary of the Laudato Si encyclical. Providence University will celebrate “Laudato Si Week” from May 19 to 26 with tree planting and 9R-themed activities to cultivate a love for nature among students. This workshop was not only a celebration of learning but also a hopeful gathering, reaffirming Providence University’s strong commitment to sustainable education.
